1. What Shine Is
Shine is a finite life-force everyone is born with: a measure of vitality, held somewhere within the body, spent to perform magic or sold for coin. Every person carries their own reservoir of it from birth.
2. Fundamental Rules
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| The reservoir | Everyone is born with a finite amount of shine. It varies person to person on a bell curve; most cluster near the middle, a rare few are born with very little or a great deal. |
| Unmeasurable | No one can measure, sense, or estimate how much shine a person holds. Not the bearer, not a mage, not any device. This is the central unknowable. |
| No regeneration | Shine never replenishes. Every drop spent is gone forever. |
| Combustion at zero | When a person's reservoir empties, the body has nothing binding its energy into coherent form. It releases all at once: a mini-explosion, a crater, glowing ash. There is no warning, except the users eyes will glow and let off shine steam. |
| Dissipates at death | A natural death is not a combustion. The shine simply fades from the body as it dies. It cannot be harvested from the dead. Every natural death is, economically, waste. |
| No direct transfer | Shine cannot pass person to person. It must be extracted into a vial first. There is no "here, take some of mine." |
| Voluntary only | Shine cannot be taken from an unwilling or unconscious person. The donor must consciously channel it out. This is a hard wall the whole economy is built around. |
Why voluntary-only matters: the system cannot simply enslave people and drain them. It must instead manufacture enough desperation that they "volunteer." The exploitation has to wear the mask of consent, which is far more damning than brute theft.
3. Learning & Using Magic
The Barrier to Entry
No meditation is required to access shine. What is required is education: you must learn how to channel it, and that knowledge lives behind University walls. This gates magic by wealth and class rather than by any spiritual discipline.
The system is self-locking. Learning to channel costs years of study the poor cannot afford. Practising magic costs shine, the very thing the poor need to sell. So you must already be comfortable to learn magic, and magic keeps you comfortable.
Knowledge = Efficiency
The central principle. Efficiency comes from working with physics rather than against it. Creating energy from nothing is the most expensive act possible. Nudging energy that already exists (a spark to ignite fuel already present) is cheap. Cost scales with how hard you force reality versus how much you cooperate with it.
| Caster | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| University scholar | Understands physics, anatomy, chemistry. Intervenes minimally: a spark, not a bonfire. Spends a fraction of the shine for the same result and can cast for a lifetime. |
| Self-taught street mage | Brute-forces everything. Burns up to fifty times the shine for identical effects. Combusts young, or stops using magic entirely and sells instead. |
Efficiency = Education, not a solved problem. A mage who understands reality more deeply can always do more with less.
4. What Magic Can & Cannot Do
Capabilities
- Create light, heat, and force
- Enhance the body (strength, speed, durability, healing)
- Ignite and manipulate existing energy and materials
- Heal injury and illness (see limits below)
Hard Limits
- Cannot create or destroy matter or energy from nothing
- Cannot transmute elements
- Cannot teleport, resurrect, or manipulate time
- Cannot read or control minds, or see the future
- Cannot reach beyond line of sight; you must see or touch the target
- Cannot add shine to a person; healing repairs the body but never refills a reservoir
The Perception Ceiling
There is a maximum to any single act, bounded by two things regardless of how much shine you hold: what you can perceive (you must see or touch the target) and how much complexity your trained mind can shape at once. This is what stops "infinite shine equals god." A master with a vast reservoir is dangerous and precise, never omnipotent.
5. Healing & Longevity
Shine can heal injury and disease, but it cannot refill a reservoir. Healing spends the healer's shine (or purchased vials) to repair a body; it never tops up the patient's own well.
So the wealthy buy longer, healthier lives. A noble survives a plague a peasant dies from. But money buys resilience, not immortality. Everyone still holds a finite, unknowable well, and if their own well empties, they combust like anyone else.
6. The Forbidden Technique
A person can voluntarily dump everything at once: a single catastrophic release producing an enormous burst of power, followed immediately by combustion. It is suicide as a weapon, spoken of only in warning.
7. Extraction & the One-Vial Limit
Selling shine means extracting it into a vial through a spinal procedure. The donor must consciously and voluntarily channel it out; if they stop channelling, the transfer stops. The extraction cannot be forced.
Why Only One Vial at a Time
The process is painful, and the pain scales with volume: the more you give, the more it hurts. Past a certain point the body's instinct to escape the pain shuts the internal channel, and the transfer ends on its own.
Chronic Seller Markers
Repeated selling is written on the body: spinal scarring, permanent numbness, chronic tremors, a hunched posture and distinctive limp. These are a visible class stigma across the city's poorest districts.
8. Storage & Fraud
- Stored shine is stable. An honest vial does not degrade, expire, or spoil, which makes it an ideal currency and store of value.
- Shine cannot be counterfeited, but vials can. Con artists wrap fake or diluted substances as genuine vials a lucrative and dangerous crime.
9. Animals & Shine
Animals carry shine, but it is unusable by humans. An animal cannot voluntarily channel its shine out, so it cannot be extracted, and it cannot use its own shine for magic.
10. Combat & Power Balance
Mages are physically conditioned warriors who use shine for decisive edges, not old wizards flinging spells. They fight with weapons and enhancement first, magic second.
| Efficiency | Techniques |
|---|---|
| Most efficient | Self-enhancement (strengthen muscle, harden skin), enhanced strikes, igniting a projectile already in flight. |
| Moderate | Environmental manipulation, heated blades, strengthened shields, area effects. |
| Expensive | Creating effects from nothing (a raw fireball), sustained effects, maintained barriers. |
| Suicidal | Dumping the entire reservoir at once (the forbidden technique). |
Balance check: a mage is force multiplication, not force replacement. Perhaps two to three times as dangerous as an equivalent hardened soldier: decisive, not godlike.
11. Black Shine
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Source | A corrupted vein far to the East, controlled and hoarded by the Eastern Kingdom. |
| Potency | Far more potent than ordinary shine, drop for drop. |
| Corruption | Unlike clean shine, it rots the user even short of depletion: blackening veins, eyes shifting amber to red, paling skin, and a slide toward cruelty, domination, and obedience. |
| Objects | Devices powered by it become tainted. Proximity breeds paranoia, aggression, and nightmares. |
| Legality | Illegal in the West as theological horror. Traded on the black market at many times the price of ordinary shine. |
The clean contrast: ordinary shine merely runs out; it does not poison you. Black shine rots you even if you never run dry.
12. The Economy
The figures below are illustrative; and subject to change at my whim.
Currency & Wages
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| 1 copper | A loaf of bread |
| 1 silver | 20 coppers; a laborer's day wage |
| 1 gold | 20 silvers |
| Laborer, per month | About 25 silvers (1.25 gold) |
| Bare survival (food + slum rent) | About 5 silvers per week |
| Senator, per year | 5,000 to 20,000 gold |
Shine Value
| Transaction | Price |
|---|---|
| Donor payout (back-room) | About one month's wage per vial |
| Donor payout (high-end, clean donor) | Somewhat more |
| Retail (end user) | Roughly four to five times the donor rate |
| Black shine (black market) | Many times the price of ordinary shine |
| A full reservoir on average, sold out | Roughly four years of wages |
Infrastructure
Engineers slot vials into their inventions like batteries: lamps, heating, cooling, water pumps, forges, carriages. Shine is this world's oil and battery combined: clean, silent, storable, portable.
| Use | Consumption |
|---|---|
| Street lamp | One vial a month. Twelve a year, a working man's wages, just to keep one stretch of street lit. |
| Noble estate (full) | Roughly a full human reservoir's worth per year. |
| The lit vs. dark border | Main boulevards and the noble district glow. The Warrens stay dark. The line between lit and unlit streets is the class border, visible from any rooftop. |
13. Society, Religion & the State
Competing doctrines exist, each conveniently aligned with the believer's interests. Some hold that selling shine is a noble sacrifice for one's family; some that it is a sin against the self; some that it is simply the natural order. Temples may bless donors or condemn the trade.
Extraction is regulated, licensed, and taxed. The state profits from and legitimises the trade while claiming to protect donors. Licensing creates the tier system sanctioned marble clinics above, illegal back-rooms below.
There is no artificial source of shine. It comes only from living people. It cannot be synthesised. So the entire edifice of wealth rests permanently on a supply of desperate human beings.
